  • Questions: Isaías Pagán De Jesús
  • Answers: Isaías Pagán De Jesús

Q: So who are you?

A: My name is Isaías Pagán De Jesús. It’s funny cuz my dad’s last name is Pagán and my mom’s is De Jesús, so it sounds like it translates to Pagan of Jesus, hahaha.

Q: Ohh haha yeah I get it. How do you pronounce that?

A: ee-sah-eeee-ahs. Stress the middle “í” with the little accent mark.

Q: “Isaías?”

A: Haha that’s pretty good, usually takes people a couple tries.

Q: So, what’s got you here?

A: Here, doing this blog type of thing? I’ve never done one. This is new for me, but it’s an assignment for a class.

Q: A whole website just for a class?

A: Well, it’s for the Global Engagement Minor I’m pursuing at Wesleyan University. I’m gonna keep updating this as I continue my college journey I guess. Honestly, I might try to use this for other parts of my life.

Q: That’s cool, so speaking of college, what are you studying at Wesleyan?

A: I’m doing the Film Major and then also the Global Engagement Minor. I’m also studying Arabic.

Q: Are you trying to go abroad with that?

A: Yes! I’m taking my next semester abroad in the American University in Cairo! I’m actually so excited.

Q: You should be! So, let me ask you, why the mix? Global Engagement and Film?

A: Well, after college, I eventually want to do something that combines my two passions – global stuff, languages, collective national consciousnesses, travel, culture – and art, storytelling, specifically filmmaking. I’ve always thought that there’s overlap between those two things, but especially during my time at Wes, I’ve begun to see how they can really intersect. I really hope to explore and define more specific ways to quantify and work with those intersections.

Q: Do you have any examples for me?

A: Well, take a look through this website, I think you’ll find something. For now, I’ll leave you with a “cultural self-portrait” I made for my Intro to Global Engagement class. I searched through years’ worth of footage on my iPhone to edit together, in order to try and present some personal cultural identity:
